DePaul wins third title in last four years
CAYCE, S.C. – For the third time in the last four seasons, DePaul men's tennis has been crowned as the BIG EAST Champions. The Blue Demons cruised to a 4-2 victory Monday morning over No. 1 seed St. John's, earning the league's automatic NCAA Tournament bid.
"I'm just proud of this group," said head coach Matt Brothers. "Proud of how they handled themselves. Just like every other season, we had some ups and downs and adversity to overcome. When you do things the right way throughout the season you are prepared for this moment right here."
Four years after winning the program's first BIG EAST title, the 'Band of Brothers' did so once again against the Red Storm. Despite dropping the doubles point, DePaul stormed back on the singles courts. Sven Moser picked up the Blue Demons first points, with a straight-set victory at No. 6 against Armando Sotelo.
Vito Tonejc has been a critical part of all three of DePaul's BIG EAST titles, continuing his streak Monday as he cruised to a 6-1, 6-4 victory at No. 1 against Martin Bugaj. Pablo Torres Almeida then took an impressive three-set win at No. 5 after winning the first set 6-3, but dropping the second 0-6 he cruised through the third set 6-0 to give the Blue Demons a 3-1 lead.
Francisco Bascon kept the Red Storm alive picking up a win at No. 3 over Shourya Verma, 6-4, 4-6, 6-1, but it didn't matter as Matteo Iaquinto clinched the match for the second-consecutive day for DePaul. Iaquinto pulled out the three-set victory on No. 4, 6-4, 4-6, 6-3.
DePaul next awaits its NCAA Tournament destination at the selection show Monday, April 29 at 5 p.m. ET. Fans can watch the show on NCAA.com. The first two rounds of the NCAA Tournament is slated to take place May 3-4.
