Blue Demons host five matches in March
CHICAGO – After spending over a month on the road, DePaul is back in the Windy City and faces Cornell on Sunday, March 2, at 12:30 p.m. CT. The Blue Demons return to XS Tennis Village for the first time since defeating UIC, 4-1, on January 25.
"We're so excited to be competing back at home and have a great opportunity against a quality Cornell team," said head coach Marisa Arce. "We're feeling good after a few days off and are going to take advantage of extra practice before the match on Sunday."
The Scarlet and Blue matched up with Harvard last season but have not faced another Ivy League opponent since defeating No. 60 Princeton in 2015. Sunday marks the first match between the Blue Demons and the Big Red since the 1990-91 campaign.
DePaul (6-5, 2-0 BIG EAST) enters the match after dominating Omaha and Creighton on the road last weekend. The Blue Demons swept the Mavericks, 7-0, on Friday. No. 1 singles Hannah Smith took home a 6-1, 6-2 victory while Eva Goncharov, Eleanor Nobbs and Roberta Sechi also collected straight-set triumphs.
On Saturday against the Bluejays, the No.49-ranked tandem of Goncharov and Smith won 6-2, with each team splitting the opening two doubles matches. With Goncharov and Smith controlling the contest on court one, the pair earned BIG EAST Doubles Team of the Week honors for the third consecutive week. Freshman Eleanor Cochran and sophomore Sasha Stula secured court three with a 6-2 victory, giving DePaul an early lead. Cochran and Stula hold an 8-3 record in dual play this season.
In singles action, Stula tallied a swift, 6-2, 6-1 advantage on court two, with freshman Isabella Gibson adding a 6-1, 6-1 win in slot five. Smith defeated reigning BIG EAST Singles Player of the Week Bianca Rademacher, 7-5, 7-5, on court one, propelling the Silchester, England native to the BIG EAST Singles Player of the Week Award. Sechi wrapped up the match with a 7-6 (2), 4-6, 1-0 (11-9) thriller, lasting over two hours for a 6-1 Blue Demon victory.
Cornell sits at 5-2 with intraconference wins over Penn and Dartmouth. Freshman Andrea Martinez De Los Rios is 4-0 in singles play to begin her collegiate career. Katie Zordani leads the Big Red in her third season as head coach. After competing as a student-athlete at Iowa, Zordani joined Cornell's staff as an assistant coach in 2018.
