Men’s tennis falls in Chicago Friday evening
CHICAGO – DePaul men's tennis opened the 2026 season with a 4-3 setback to regional foe Cleveland State on Friday night at XS Tennis Village. With four singles courts requiring a third set, the opener featured multiple close results that set a foundation for the Blue Demons moving forward.
From the opening serve, doubles play kept the match tight. Cleveland State struck first at No. 3, where Elias Anwar and Sven Moser were edged 6-4. The top two doubles courts were pushed to seven-point tiebreakers, with Alejandro Gandini and Pablo Torres Almeida earning a 7-6(2) win at No. 1. Sebastian Medica and Augusto Pardo Cano battled at No. 2 but came up short in a 7-6(3) tiebreaker, giving the Vikings a 1-0 lead entering singles.
Singles play opened with a strong showing from Alejandro Gandini, who earned a 6-1, 6-1 victory over Nico Jamison at No. 2. Cleveland State responded with wins at the No. 3 and No. 1 positions against Pablo Torres Almeida and Tobias Leitner, building a 3-1 advantage. DePaul cut into the margin as Andy Hadziabdic secured a three-set win at No. 4, but the Vikings clinched the team point with a three-set decision at No. 6. Sebastian Medica closed the night with a comeback victory at No. 5, trimming the final score to 4-3.
