Men’s tennis falls 4-1 to close George Lott Classic
CHICAGO – After a perfect 2-0 Saturday and a ranked win over Cal Poly to open the George Lott Classic, DePaul men's tennis saw its momentum stall Sunday morning as the Blue Demons closed the weekend with a 4-1 setback to Dartmouth at XS Tennis Village.
Doubles began with a tight battle at the top of the lineup, where Alejandro Gandini and Pablo Torres Almeida were locked at 5-5 with Miles Groom and Henry Ren before the match went unfinished. Dartmouth secured the doubles point with victories at No. 2 and No. 3, as Malhar Patel and Calvin Wang defeated Sebastian Medica and Augusto Pardo Cano, 6-1, while Denny Bao and Kornel Halmos topped Thomas Giles and Sven Moser, 6-2.
In singles, Gandini provided the lone point for the Blue Demons with a straight-set victory at No. 1. The graduate student controlled the match throughout, defeating Ren 6-2, 6-4 to even the overall score at 1-1.
The remainder of the lineup proved tightly contested, with four singles courts pushed to third sets as DePaul looked to claim three of them to secure the team result.
Pablo Torres Almeida opened with a first-set tiebreak win at No. 3 before the match shifted in the final two sets, while Sebastian Medica captured the opening set at No. 4 before the contest moved to a deciding third. Augusto Pardo Cano also battled deep at No. 5 in a narrow straight-set match.
The deciding point came at No. 4, where Miles Groom rallied past Medica after dropping the first set to clinch the match for Dartmouth.
Two matches remained unfinished when play concluded. Andy Hadziabdic mounted a strong comeback at No. 2 and held a 5-2 advantage in the third set against Kornel Halmos, while Sven Moser was locked in a tight deciding set with Denny Bao at No. 6.
