Graduate student leads Blue Demons in league action
CHICAGO – DePaul men's tennis graduate student Alejandro Gandini has been named BIG EAST Men's Singles Player of the Week, the conference announced Monday afternoon. Gandini's honor comes after leading DePaul to a dominant win over Xavier on Friday, March 20, as the Blue Demons improved to 2-0 in BIG EAST play.
The Santiago, Dominican Republic native anchored DePaul at the top of the lineup, earning a straight-set victory at No. 1 singles over Xavier's Nick Herdoiza. Gandini battled to a 7-6(3), 6-4 win, securing his sixth victory of the season at the top singles position.
He also contributed to the doubles point on court one, teaming up with Pablo Torres Almeida for a 6-2 victory over Nick Herdoiza and Max Pettingell at No. 1 doubles, helping DePaul take early control of the match.
The Blue Demons controlled the contest from the outset, capturing the doubles point and carrying that momentum through singles play in their most convincing win of the season. The result marked the program's first 7-0 sweep in over a year and continued DePaul's dominance in the series, as the Blue Demons now hold a 13-1 all-time advantage over Xavier and have won eight-straight meetings between the programs.
Gandini previously earned BIG EAST Singles Player of the Week honors on March 3 following a perfect 3-0 weekend at the George Lott Classic, where he recorded three wins at No. 1 singles, including match-clinching victories over No. 62 Cal Poly and Army.
In dual play this season, Gandini has compiled a 6-4 record at No. 1 singles and a 4-1 mark at the top doubles court.
