DePaul sophomore goes perfect in conference weekend
CHICAGO – DePaul men's tennis sophomore Sebastian Medica has been named BIG EAST Men's Singles Player of the Week, the conference announced Monday afternoon. Medica earned his first weekly honor following a perfect weekend that helped DePaul secure an undefeated BIG EAST record.
The San Luis Potosi, Mexico native went 2-0 at No. 2 singles against BIG EAST opponents, guiding the Blue Demons to wins over Marquette and Creighton to finish 6-0 in league play, DePaul's first perfect conference campaign since 2022.
Medica opened the weekend in a pivotal role during Saturday's 5-2 comeback victory over Marquette. After the Blue Demons dropped the doubles point, he sparked the turnaround with a 7-5, 6-2 straight-set win over Kristian Blagoev at No. 2 singles, helping shift momentum in a match that stretched nearly four hours. On Sunday, Medica delivered again in DePaul's 7-0 sweep of Creighton on Senior Day. Facing Mathis Dahler, Medica battled back from a 4-5 deficit in the opening set to claim a 7-5 victory before closing out the match 6-3, contributing to the Blue Demons' first dual match sweep without dropping a singles set since 2022.
Medica has been a steady force in the lineup all spring, holding a 13-6 dual record, including a 5-1 mark at No. 2 singles. He has recorded wins at every position in the lineup except No. 6 and owns a 7-1 record across the top three courts. With Medica anchoring the top of the lineup, DePaul has won four-straight matches and enters postseason play with strong momentum.
