A reimagined approach to student-athlete development
At DePaul, student-athlete success isn't just something we strive for. It's something we achieve.
As the landscape of college athletics continues to evolve, so too must the way we support the student-athletes who represent DePaul University. With the growth of the transfer portal, an increase in graduate students, and extended eligibility, today's student-athlete journey looks very different than it did even a few years ago. Recognizing that shift, DePaul Athletics has reimagined its student-athlete development structure to better meet the modern demands of college athletics.
Introducing ELEVATE. Inspired by Chicago's iconic "EL" train system, ELEVATE reflects the idea that every student-athlete's path is unique. Just like riding the train, student-athletes can hop on and off at the points that best support their goals. Whether arriving on campus as a first-year student, transferring in with new aspirations, or returning for an additional year of eligibility, ELEVATE provides a flexible, personalized roadmap.
Previously, DePaul's developmental curriculum followed a traditional four-year progression tied to academic standing. While that model served its time, today's environment requires something more adaptable. ELEVATE replaces a one-size-fits-all approach with individualized pathways tailored to each student-athlete's academic, personal and professional ambitions.
"Our goal is to ensure every student-athlete feels the programming is built for them, regardless of when they arrive at DePaul or how long they are here," said Senior Associate AD for Student-Athlete Development Dr. Kate O'Brien. "At the same time, we want recruits, current student-athletes, coaches and staff to clearly understand the scope of opportunities available."
The comprehensive curriculum focuses on four core pillars:
• Personal & Professional Development
• Leadership Development
• Community Engagement & Service
• Health, Wellness & Nutrition
Together, these pillars form a holistic and scaffolded plan that equips Blue Demons with the tools to thrive during their time at DePaul and long after graduation.
Supporting this evolution is a meaningful structural change within the athletics department. DePaul's Athletics Academic Advising (AAA) department has been renamed the Center for Student-Athlete Development, a title that more accurately reflects the broad, holistic work being done to serve Blue Demons both in and out of the classroom. The Center's tagline, "Where your path meets your purpose," underscores the department's commitment to aligning each student-athlete's ambitions with intentional support and guidance.
The Center for Student-Athlete Development helps student-athletes maximize their academic potential by mastering their sport while earning a college degree. The staff provides time management training, tutoring, registration assistance, and comprehensive academic support services, all while fostering growth beyond the classroom.
At a time when resources across college athletics are increasingly finite, DePaul Athletics remains steadfast in its investment in student-athlete development. Rather than scale back, the department is choosing to strengthen and modernize its support systems. ELEVATE represents that commitment in action.
In a city defined by movement, connectivity, and opportunity, DePaul's new model reflects the spirit of Chicago itself. Student-athletes chart their own course. They define their destination. And through ELEVATE, DePaul Athletics ensures they have the structure, support, and momentum to get there.
