Medica Earns Win at ITA All-Americans, Headlines DePaul at Notre Dame

Blue Demons post eight wins over Big Ten and ACC programs, including Northwestern, Wisconsin, Louisville, Notre Dame

CHICAGO – DePaul men's tennis put together a statement weekend against Power Four competition at the Notre Dame Invite, earning eight wins over players from Notre Dame, Northwestern, Wisconsin and Louisville. Across the ITA All-Americans, WMU Invite and Notre Dame Invite, the Blue Demons combined for 18 wins, 15 in singles and three in doubles. Junior Sebastian Medica led the way, going 5-1 in singles on the weekend.

"I was really happy with how our guys competed," said head coach Matt Brothers. "They all took a couple of big steps forward this weekend."

ITA All-Americans
Medica earned a spot on one of the sport's biggest stages at the ITA All-Americans, and he made an immediate statement. Down 0-6 in the opening set against Tulane's Brett Gloria, he reset, took control and won the next two sets 6-3, 6-2 for a win in a field where every match is a test. He then faced Danial Rakhmatullayev of Michigan State, pushing the second set to a tiebreak in a 6-2, 7-6(7), 6-3 loss.

Notre Dame Invite
Medica carried that momentum to South Bend and did not lose a singles match. He fought back from a first-set deficit to take down Evan Lee of host Notre Dame 3-6, 6-2, 10-7 on Friday, then dominated Megargee of Northwestern 6-0, 7-6 and handled Olsson of Wisconsin 6-3, 7-5 on Saturday. He finished the run on Sunday with a 7-5, 6-4 victory over Hamza El Amine of Louisville, giving him wins over players from four Power 4 programs in one weekend.

The Blue Demons got strong contributions up and down the lineup. Junior Tobias Leitner came from behind to beat Golden of Northwestern in three sets, added a 2-6, 6-3, 10-8 comeback over Onofrei of Louisville, and partnered with Medica to beat the Wisconsin duo of Olsson/Beduhn in doubles. Junior Andy Hadziabdic earned a win over Giuseppe Cerasuolo of Notre Dame, freshman Alex Haage cruised past Diego Blanco of Holy Cross 6-1, 6-3, and the pair added a doubles win against Jezyk/Stiblik of Holy Cross.

WMU Invite
DePaul collected seven wins at the WMU Invite, Sept. 25-26. Freshman Valter Larsson led the group with three singles victories, over Shalakov (BSU), Worobel (BUT) and St.Laurent (MU), and paired with sophomore Bernardo Vialle for a 7-6(7) doubles win against Chad Anderson/Perrill (MU). Sophomore Augusto Pardo Cano picked up singles wins over Perrill (MU) and Hernandez (GU), while Vialle rebounded from a lost second set to beat Borbiu of Butler 6-1, 1-6, 10-4.
