Jack Owens joined the DePaul men's basketball coaching staff in March 2024, the first assistant coach hired under head coach Chris Holtmann. Owens joined DePaul after two seasons at Ohio State which followed a five-year stint as head coach at Miami (Ohio).Â
"After working with Jack over the last several years I know firsthand how much he adds to a coaching staff," Holtmann said. "His background in leading his own program as well as his experience as an assistant makes him an incredibly well-rounded coach. Jack has experience in all aspects of the game and is a tremendous talent developer, coach and recruiter. We are excited for him and his family to join us in Chicago."
Owens helped make an immediate impact in Lincoln Park, where DePaul saw an 11-win increase and the largest KenPom improvement nationally in 2024-25. The 2024-25 squad led the BIG EAST Conference in bench points per game and set a program record with 314 made three-pointers. He was instrumental in the tutledge and development of NJ Benson, who ranked ninth in the BIG EAST in rebounds per game and seventh in blocks per game.Â
In his first season at Miami, Owens helped show immediate progress as the RedHawks' tallied 16 wins and a College Basketball Invitational appearance. It was the programs most victories and first postseason appearance in seven years. Owens success continued as he led the RedHawks in 2020-21 to their first winning season since 2009.
Prior to his time as a head coach, Owens spent nine seasons on staff at Purdue including six as an associate head coach to Matt Painter. During his time in West Lafayette, the Boilermakers recorded 209 wins including 27 in his final season on their way to capturing the Big Ten Regular Season Championship. In his nine seasons with Purdue, the program made seven NCAA Tournaments and three Sweet Sixteen's. Owens helped produce five NBA draft picks, including AJ Hammons and Robbie Hummel.
Owens arrived at Purdue after a five-year stint as an assistant at Southern Illinois. Owens helped guide the Salukis to a 25-5 record in 2003-04 and a NCAA Tournament berth. Over the next four seasons, SIU earned three more NCAA Tournament appearances and a Sweet Sixteen nod. Owens also spent time as an assistant coach at his alma matter, Eastern Illinois.
Owens began his coaching career as an assistant at Howard Community College and Barton County Community College.
The Indianapolis native began his collegiate playing career at Murray State and played a season at Howard Community College, before concluding his career at Eastern Illinois. Owens was a honorable mention All-Ohio Valley Conference player, serving as team captain his senior season.
Owens and his wife, Kamilah, have three daughters, Alanah, Aniyah and Anyah.
