Jocelyn Smith Carter, PhD is a Saint Vincent de Paul Professor of Clinical Psychology at DePaul University. She was appointed the DePaul Faculty Athletics Representative (FAR) in August 2023. Since joining the DePaul faculty in 2008, Dr. Carter has been engaged in a number of teaching, service, and research opportunities related to athletics. Dr. Carter currently serves as the Associate Chair of the Department of Psychology and served as the Director of Clinical Training in clinical psychology from 2015-2022. At DePaul, she teaches professional development, psychopathology, and research methods and mentors undergraduate and graduate students through their research milestones. She earned her Bachelor of Arts in psychology from Yale University where she ran track and played club soccer. She also earned her Master of Arts and Doctorate of Philosophy from Vanderbilt University.
Her research program focuses on increasing physical activity and sports participation in children and adolescents as a way to reduce the impact of stress and improve health outcomes. She partners with community based organizations such as Urban Initiatives, America SCORES, the Center for Healing and Justice Through Sport, and The Neighborhood Boys and Girls Club in order to understand how different sports settings can improve their offerings to the children, families, coaches, and staff they serve. She conducts this work with the belief that all youth should have access to safe and supportive sports environments where they can build skills that will last a lifetime.
Dr. Carter speaks about youth sports and mental health for organizations such as the park districts, schools, and sports teams. She serves on the Rosalind Franklin Doctorate of Physical Therapy External Advisory Board, the Society of Pediatric Psychology Anti-Racism Program Development Board, and the Council of University Directors of Clinical Psychology Board. Dr. Carter has been the College of Science and Health representative to the University Athletic Board since 2017. During that time, she provided workshops to student athletes related to self-compassion, transitioning to life after athletics, and coping with stress. She also contributed to the development of a student-athlete needs assessment tool.
