Chicago--In definitive fashion, the DePaul volleyball team downed cross town rival UIC three games to none, 16-14, 15-11 and 15-13.
"We needed [to win] one in three and it couldn't be better that it was this one," said head coach Dawn Dockstader.
The win evens the all time series between the two schools at 10 wins apiece. One of the keys for the Blue Demons was their ability to distribute the ball evenly on offense. The team ended with four players who had double digit kill totals.
"Kara [Jakusz] really did a nice job of spreading the ball around on offense tonight. She averaged over 15 assists per game and that's awesome," said Dockstader.
Jakusz finished the night with 51 assists. The beneficiaries of her sets were Katie Engel, who had a match high 21 kills, Stephanie Bishop (12 kills) and Christa Dirr and Melissa Nordine who each had 10 kills. Engel and Dirr both closed the match hitting over .300 as they hit .326 and .333 respectively.
Defensively, Bishop paced the team with 17 digs with Engel chipping in 13 more. Dockstader was also impressed with the serving and passing of Mary Anne Flanigan
"Flan did a great job serving and passing all night long," said Dockstader. Flanigan closed the match with four service aces and six digs.
The win moves the team's record to 17-7 (7-3 Conference USA) overall. The Blue Demons' next matches will be at home this Friday and Saturday. They host Tulane Friday night and Southern Miss the following evening.
