Volleyball On The Road For Weekend
10/5/2000 12:00:00 AM | WOMEN'S VOLLEYBALL
By dropping both of its matches last week, DePaul (12-5, 3-2 Conference USA) fell from a tie for first in the American Division to a tie with Marquette for second.
St Louis (6-9, 1-4 C-USA) is currently fifth in the six team division, but defeated Louisville in five games for their only conference win of the season. Charlotte (6-10, 1-4 C-USA) is tied with St Louis in the division and picked up its lone conference victory against the Billikens in a five game match.
Despite their records, both teams have players who are capable of carrying their respective teams. For St. Louis, middle hitter Colleen Hunter ranks in the top seven of three of the conference's six statistical categories. Hunter is third in hitting percentage (.311), seventh in blocks per game (0.98) and third in kills per game (4.92). For Charlotte, setter Ozlem Ozkan Ayture is tenth in assists per game (8.33), but she has the most triple doubles of any player in conference this season (three). She also just recently moved into fourth all-time on the C-USA assist list.
DePaul swept St. Louis last season and split its pair with Charlotte, with all four matches lasting at least four games.
The Blue Demons will rely on its offense to bounce back from its performance a week ago. While the team still leads the conference in hitting percentage at .246, the Blue Demons collectively hit .142 in its last two matches. The team will need to improve on that performance if it is to pick up a pair of wins this weekend.
