CHICAGO – Just as the temperature in Chicago drops into the 30’s and 40’s, the DePaul men’s soccer team heads south for a two-game swing through the state of Florida. DePaul opens the weekend with a Conference USA match at South Florida followed by a non-conference tilt at Stetson.
Looking at the Blue Demons
Despite winning just two matches this season, the DePaul Blue Demons are still in the hunt for the Conference USA tournament. A victory at South Florida could move the Blue Demons into the picture for the league tourney in mid-November. The top six teams travel to Tampa, Fla. for the four-day tournament. DePaul's overall record is 2-8-2 following last Saturday’s 4-0 loss against UAB.
Senior forward Chris Greer leads DePaul with nine points on four goals and an assist. His four scores this season have moved him into fifth all-time in DePaul history with 25 career goals. Ed Kiefer and Robert Marshall have two scores apiece this season while Dimitri Rousseau has a goal and two assists. In goal, keepers Jash Chavero and Jeff Klitzke have combined for a 2.35 goals against average while recording 61 saves.
Checking Out This Weekend’s Opponents
The third-place South Florida Bulls enter Friday's match at 10-3 overall and 3-2 in league play. USF lost to Saint Louis, 5-1, last weekend. Jason Cudjoe leads the team with six goals and an assist. He is followed by Jeff Thwaites with four scores and three players with two goals each. The Bulls lead the all-time series, 7-0-0.
Sunday’s non-conference match will take place in Deland, Fla., against the Stetson Hatters. Stetson enters the weekend at 10-5 overall and 4-2 in the Atlantic Sun Conference. The Hatters have won four consecutive matches and are led by Justin Niemann and Ian Zarac with nine goals each.
Rearranging the Schedule
With the recent national events, a number of changes have occurred on the 2001 DePaul soccer schedule. DePaul filled in the two cancelled games at the Leatherneck Kelme Classic with Northern Illinois on Sept. 18 and Western Illinois on Sept. 29.
The match originally scheduled for Sept. 18 at TCU has been moved to Nov. 8 at 3 p.m. The kickoff for the final home match on Nov. 4 against Charlotte has been moved up to 1 p.m.
Looking Ahead
DePaul stays on the road for a Nov. 2 match at Valparaiso. Kickoff is set for 2:30 p.m. between the Blue Demons and Crusaders.
The final home game of the regular season is Nov. 4 against Charlotte at 1 p.m. The Blue Demons seniors will be honored in their last game at Wish Field.
