Blue Demons Pound East Carolina, Improve to 13-1

CHICAGO -- The Blue Demons volleyball team swept East Carolina 30-14. 30-20, 30-24 in a Conference USA match-up. DePaul adds to its best start in school history improving to 13-1 and its best Conference USA start in school history at 5-0.
"We came out focused knowing what we had to do to get a victory tonight," explained freshman Amie West.
The Blue Demons were ready to play and jumped East Carolina from the start building a 8-2 lead and building on it the rest of the way. Junior Katie Engel pounded five kills with a couple digs and a .833 hitting percentage.
The rest of the way every one on the DePaul bench saw the floor. In game two, West delivered 11 of her game-high 26 assists leading the Blue Demons to a 30-20 victory.
West said, "Before the second game we were told we were going to get to play. That settled every one down and we played real well."
Freshman Janet Goreham's six kills led the way in game three as DePaul finished the match with a 30-24 victory. East Carolina trailed 8-4 but the Blue Demons extended its lead to 21-12 and the Pirates never caught up.
Sophomore Lara Marks added seven kills and five digs with a .455 hitting percentage in two games. The Blue Demons hit a .330 for the match while holding the Pirates to a .086 hitting percentage.
DePaul hosts Illinois at 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday starting a huge two-week stretch where the Blue Demons take on four conference foes on the road.
"This is definitely the toughest stretch on our schedule," said Coach Dawn Dockstader. "It will be a great test for us and we will see what kind of team we are."
