VALPARAISO, Ind. – In their final non-conference match of the regular season, the DePaul men’s soccer team lost, 4-2, at Valparaiso on Friday afternoon. The fireworks started early as the Blue Demons led, 2-1, just 10 minutes into the match. However, they couldn’t hold the lead and dropped their record to 2-11-2 overall.
Ed Kiefer scored the game’s first goal to give the Blue Demons the early advantage. Kiefer didn’t waste any time as he lofted the ball over Crusader keeper Marc Cilfone at 2:16 in the first half. For Kiefer, it was his third score of the season.
Less than three minutes later, Valpo evened the match at 1-1 on a Jon Flugstad score off a free kick at 5:54.
Chris Greer gave DePaul their second lead of the match at 9:54 when he broke through the Valpo defense after getting a pass from Robert Marshall. Greer’s score moved him into a tie for fourth all-time at DePaul with 26 career goals.
From that point, DePaul wouldn’t dent the net again as the Crusaders tied the match in the 43rd minute and used two second-half goals for the 4-2 decision. In the match, Valpo outshot the Blue Demons, 16-12.
Up next for DePaul is their final home match of the season as they take on Charlotte Sunday afternoon. Kickoff is scheduled for 1 p.m. at Wish Field. The five Blue Demon seniors will be honored in a pre-match ceremony.
