DeKalb, Ill. - After taking an early 1-0 lead, the DePaul men's soccer team allowed two second-half scores by Northern Illinois in the 2-1 decision on Tuesday afternoon. With the loss, the Blue Demons fell to 0-4 while Northern Illinois improved to 2-3. DePaul outshot the Huskies, 20-14, but were unable to find the net in the second half.
Chris Greer found the net for DePaul at the 12:58 mark to give the Blue Demons the early 1-0 advantage. Greer headed in a long free kick from Bob Kruse past NIU goalkeeper Rasih Pala. The scoreboard remained that way heading into the halftime break.
Four minutes into the second half, Northern Illinois tied the match on a three-on-two with Andrew Conti finishing the play for the score. The Huskies broke the tie at 56:02 on a score that DePaul keeper Jash Chavero tipped, but the referee ruled that the ball crossed the goal line for the eventual game-winning goal.
The Blue Demons return to Conference USA action this weekend when they host Louisville at Wish Field. The match will be part of a C-USA doubleheader with the DePaul women's team. The Sunday schedule has been rearranged with the women playing UAB at 10 a.m. on Sunday followed by the men against the Cardinals at 1 p.m.
The original schedule had the men playing at noon and the women at 2:30. With the recent events in the nation, UAB had to rearrange travel plans and therefore the women's game was moved to an earlier time.
