CHICAGO - The men's soccer team will play just their second home match of the season on Sunday when they host Conference USA foe Louisville. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m. at Wish Field. The game will be the second of a Blue Demon doubleheader as the women's team plays UAB at 10 a.m. DePaul looks to get on the winning track after two straight one-goal losses.
Noting the Blue Demons
DePaul enters Sunday's match looking for the first win of the season. The Blue Demons have dropped back-to-back one goal matches to Detroit and Northern Illinois. DePaul lost 3-2 in overtime to Detroit on Sept. 9 and 2-1 on Sept. 18 at NIU.
Senior forward Chris Greer leads DePaul with six points on three goals. Ed Kiefer has also scored a goal this season in addition to an assist. Bob Kruse, Claudio Ferre and Dimitri Rousseau each have a single assist. In goal, Jash Chavero needs just two more games to become DePaul's all-time leader in games played by a goalkeeper.
Last Time Out
After taking an early 1-0 lead, the DePaul men's soccer team allowed two second-half scores by Northern Illinois in the 2-1 decision on Sept. 18. With the loss, the Blue Demons fell to 0-4 while Northern Illinois improved to 2-3. DePaul outshot the Huskies, 20-14, but were unable to find the net in the second half.
Chris Greer found the net for DePaul at the 12:58 mark to give the Blue Demons the early 1-0 advantage. Greer headed in a long free kick from Bob Kruse past NIU goalkeeper Rasih Pala. The scoreboard remained that way heading into the halftime break.
Four minutes into the second half Northern Illinois tied the match on a three-on-two with Andrew Conti finishing the play for the score. The Huskies broke the tie at 56:02 on a score that DePaul keeper Jash Chavero tipped, but the referee ruled that the ball crossed the goal line for the eventual game-winning goal.
Rearranging the Schedule
With the recent national events, a number of changes have occurred on the 2001 DePaul soccer schedule. DePaul has filled in the two cancelled games at the Leatherneck Kelme Classic with Northern Illinois on Sept. 18 and Western Illinois on Sept. 29.
The match originally scheduled for Sept. 18 at TCU has been moved to Nov. 8 at 3 p.m. The kickoff for the Nov. 4 contest against Charlotte has been moved up to 1 p.m.
Looking Ahead
The Blue Demons go back on the road for their next two matches. On Sept. 26, DePaul travels to Ft. Wayne to play Indiana-Purdue Ft. Wayne at 7 p.m. followed by a Saturday morning match at Western Illinois. That game was originally scheduled for Sept. 14, but was postponed. Kickoff is set for 11 a.m.
