CHICAGO - After slipping and sliding through the mud Sunday afternoon the Blue Demons and Cardinals ended in a 3-3 tie at Wish Field. DePaul took an early 2-0 lead and were up 3-1 with less than five minutes left in regulation, but a pair of Louisville goals in the final 3:46 tied the game and sent it into overtime where neither team was able to find the golden goal.
DePaul struck quickly on two scores in the first 12 minutes of the match. Robert Marshall scored his first goal of the season on a penalty kick at 7:54 followed by freshman Anthony Minniti's first collegiate goal at 11:58.
Thirteen minutes later, Coutenay Commander scored the Cardinal's first goal off a corner kick in the 25th minute. The score stayed at 2-1 heading into intermission.
At 85:31, DePaul's Chris Greer scored the third Blue Demon goal of the match to make the score 3-1. Greer dribbled around a Lousiville defender and put the ball past goalkeeper Jeremy Morales for his fourth goal of the year.
Louisville quickly answered in their next possession as Bryan Elkan scored just 15 seconds later. Devin Mathews was credited with the assist. Less than two minutes later, the Cardinals tied the score at 3-3 on Commander's second goal of the match at 87:10.
In the two overtime periods, both teams had opportunities, but neither was able to find the net. DePaul's Jash Chavero finished the match with seven saves while Morales had four stops.
Up next for DePaul is a pair of road matches. The Blue Demons travel to Fort Wayne, Ind., on Sept. 26 to play IPFW. On Saturday, DePaul will play a postponed match at Western Illinois. The next home game is Oct. 3 against Saint Louis.
