CHICAGO - The men's soccer team will go on the road to play Western Illinois on Saturday. The match was originally scheduled as the opening game of the Leatherneck Kelme Classic, but was rescheduled due to the events of Sept. 11. The Blue Demons enter the match at 0-5-1 while the Leathernecks are 1-5-1.
Noting the Blue Demons
DePaul enters Saturday's match looking for the first win of the season. Prior to Wednesday night’s 3-1 loss at IPFW, the Blue Demons dropped back-to-back one goal matches to Detroit and Northern Illinois. DePaul lost 3-2 in overtime to Detroit on Sept. 9 and 2-1 on Sept. 18 at NIU.
Senior forward Chris Greer leads DePaul with six points on three goals. Ed Kiefer has also scored a goal this season in addition to a pair of assists. Bob Kruse, Claudio Ferre and Dimitri Rousseau each have a single assist. In goal, Jash Chavero needs just two more games to become DePaul's all-time leader in games played by a goalkeeper.
Last Time Out
For the third time in the last four matches, the Blue Demons put the first score on the board, but lost the match as they fell, 3-1, to the Mastodons on Wednesday night. Dimtri Rousseau scored DePaul's lone goal as the Blue Demons record dropped to 0-5-1.
Rousseau scored his second career goal in the 29th minute off a cross from Ed Kiefer. Kiefer lofted the ball up and Rousseau headed it in for the first goal of the match.
IPFW answered the DePaul goal with a score just 30 seconds later as Marko Jagustin found the net at 29:13. The Mastodons scored two more times in the 55th and 67th minute for the 3-1 final.
Rearranging the Schedule
With the recent national events, a number of changes have occurred on the 2001 DePaul soccer schedule. DePaul has filled in the two cancelled games at the Leatherneck Kelme Classic with Northern Illinois on Sept. 18 and Western Illinois on Sept. 29.
The match originally scheduled for Sept. 18 at TCU has been moved to Nov. 8 at 3 p.m. The kickoff for the Nov. 4 contest against Charlotte has been moved up to 1 p.m.
Looking Ahead
The Blue Demons return to Wish Field for a Conference USA match against fourth-ranked Saint Louis. Kickoff is set for 3 p.m. on Oct. 3.
