Demons Open Indoor Season At Badger Track Classic

Madison, Wis. -- The DePaul men's and women's track and field teams opened their indoor schedules at the Badger Track Classic this weekend. The University of Wisconsin hosted the event with Beloit College, Chicago State, Concordia, Lawrence, Marquette, North Park, UW-Milwaukee, UW-Platville, UW-Whitewater and DePaul rounding out the field. There was no team scoring for the meet.
Seniors Frank Guzman and Carey Ryan led a successful weekend for the Blue Demons by qualifying for the NCAAs with their performances. Guzman led the field in the shot put, recording a 17.80m (58'4 3/4) toss. Ryan recorded a 20.24m (66'5) toss to win the Weight Throw competition.
Junior Luis Samayoa posted a 4:22.37 time in the mile run to lead the field. Other Blue Demon runners with successful days included senior Aaron Cherrington posting a 51.15 in the 400 meters and sophomore Doug Bohr placing a 53.06 in the 400 meters. Junior Sal Andrade finished fourth in the 600 meters with a time of 1:23.36.
On the women's side, sophomore Diana Runnels 26.73 was the best mark in the 200 meters. Runnels also came in second in the 600 meters with a time of 1:40.73. Sophomore Shelly Knight led was victorious in the 400 meters with a mark of 1:03.49. Freshman Marlene Key came in second place in the mile run with a time of 5:31.99.
The men and women are in action again this Saturday, January 19, at the Carthage College Division I Invite.
