One More Exhibition
Tonight is the second, and final, exhibition for the Blue Demons prior to the opening of the 2002-03 campaign. DePaul will open the regular season on November 23 at Northern Illinois. The home opener is slated for November 30 against Central Michigan at the Allstate Arena. Tip-off is at 1 p.m.
About The Opponent
Lewis is coming off one of the most successful seasons in school history. The Flyers won the Great Lakes Valley Conference Tournament, reached the NCAA Division II Great Lakes Regional final ("Sweet 16") and tied the school record of 25 victories. Lewis' top returning player is 6-8 junior Austin Real who was the team's leading rebounder (6.8 rpg) and the second leading scorer (11.9 ppg).
Last Meeting
Lewis led by 10 points at halftime before the Blue Demons rallied to post an 87-80 win over the Flyers on November 17, 2000 at the Allstate Arena in the regular season opener for both teams. DePaul had five players in double figures led by Bobby Simmons who tossed in 19 points while Andre Brown added 18 points and 11 rebounds. Imari Sawyer dished out 11 assists and scored 10 points. Josh Virostko game-high 24 points led Lewis. Sammy Bacino had 20 points while Austin Real had 13 points and a game-high 12 rebounds.
Blue Demons Win Exhibition Opener
DePaul captured its exhibition opener on Tuesday with a 79-70 win over the EA Sports Midwest All-Stars. Sam Hoskin scored 19 points and grabbed 12 rebounds while Delonte Holland also recorded 19 points and had eight boards. Drake Diener chipped in with 12 points. Aaron Turner led the All-Stars with 15 points. The Blue Demons out rebounded the All-Stars 38-28 and were 19-21 (.905) from the free throw line.
Hits & Bits
DePaul's Andre Brown was named to the Conference USA All-Preseason team the league announced last week. The 6-9 junior from Chicago was joined on the squad by Marquette's Dwayne Wade, Louisville's Reece Gaines, Cincinnati's Jason Maxiell, TCU's Junior Blount and Saint Louis' Marque Perry... Brown returns after becoming the first DePaul player since 1988-89 (Stanley Brundy) to lead the team in scoring, rebounding, field goal percentage and blocked shots in the same season... For the first time since the 1990-91 season, DePaul will play all of its regular season games at the Allstate Arena... senior Joe Tulley enters the season ranked 11th in DePaul history for 3pt. field goals made and attempted... DePaul will dress an additional walk-on tonight in #11 R.J. Pavlacka (G, 5-11, 160, Jr., Grand Rapids, Mich., Northview H.S.).
