DePaul Defeats Loyola

CHICAGO-The DePaul Blue Demon volleyball squad took a break from Conference USA play to visit cross town rival Loyola, Tuesday evening. DePaul defeated the Loyola Ramblers for the first time since 1990. The Blue Demons pulled out the win in five-games (26-30, 30-26, 30-26, 18-30, ). The Blue Demons are now 10-11, and 2-2 C-USA, while the Ramblers go to 8-13, and 3-3 Horizon League.
"As a team we jumped on the seniors back's tonight" Head Coach Dawn Dockstader said. "Our seniors, Meg Griffin, Janet Cotter and Lara Marks emotionally lead the team. They all put up some impressive numbers and I am proud of them. This is their first win against Loyola and it was an exciting one."
For the sixth time this season the Blue Demons were pushed to five games. DePaul is now 2-3 when forced to a five game match.
The Blue Demons were unable to string together points in game-one. DePaul committed 18 costly errors, to hand the Ramblers game-one 19-30. Mandy Moorberg had four-kills for the Blue Demons.
DePaul would take game-two from the Ramblers 30-26. The Blue Demons saw explosive hitting from everyone on the floor, as a team they hit a .257. Game-two also saw five-players hit over .200. Many Moorberg led the Blue Demons with seven kills and a .417 attack percentage.
The Blue Demons came back from the break with fire and intensity in their eyes. DePaul came out swinging and won game-three 30-26. Janet Cotter nailed down 4 kills and a .400 hitting percentage. Ellen Hayes led the defense with six digs, while, Janet Goreham found the floor on two solo blocks.
DePaul came up short in game-four losing 18-30; forcing a game-five.
Game-five saw aggressive play at the net by the Blue Demons to win the game (15-11) and the match. Mandy Moorberg tallied three kills to lead the Blue Demons offensively.
Defensively the Blue Demons saw four players in double digit digs.Junior Janet Goreham nailed down four solo blocks and two assisted blocks.
The Blue Demons will be back in C-USA action this weekend, visiting Southern Miss on Friday and Tulane on Saturday. Both matches will be played at 7:00 pm.
