CHICAGO – The men’s soccer team continued their strong month of October with a 2-0 win over visiting Charlotte on Saturday afternoon at Wish Field. DePaul used goals by Edwin Arreola and Mike Fenton to win their sixth match in the last seven tries.
Both teams went back-and-forth through the first half with neither team able to create many offensive opportunities. The 49ers managed four shots while the DePaul (7-7-0, 3-2-0 C-USA) managed just three.
DePaul came alive in the second half as they were credited with nine shots. With just over 30 minutes left in the second stanza Arreola and Patrick Vyncke each missed header’s right in front of the Charlotte goal. Arroela’s attempt was saved by Charlotte’s Lucas Mackanos and Vyncke’s was just wide of the left post.
In the 73rd minute, Kevin Riemer found himself wide open in front of the goal only to see Mackanos make the kick-save to hold the Blue Demons scoreless. Four minutes later, it was Michael Timlin’s turn as he blocked a header by Charlotte’s Mira Mupier and then made the save to keep the visitors without a goal.
The persistence by the Blue Demons paid off as Adam Hermsen found Claudio Ferre down the left sideline. Ferre served the ball in front of the Charlotte goal and Arreola was there to send it to the back of the net at 79:43.
Just after entering the match, Fenton sealed the Blue Demon victory with his first goal of the season at 87:37. Luke Rojo crossed the ball to Fenton from the right sideline allowing the sophomore the time to set up and blast it to the upper right corner.
The Blue Demons finished the match with 12 shots while Charlotte (4-7-2, 3-3-1 C-USA) took 10 shots. Timlin made three saves while Mackanos was credited with five. During the recent run, the Blue Demons have allowed just one goal in the last seven matches. Timlin’s third consecutive shutout lowered his goals against average to 0.84.
