CHICAGO – Goals in each half by Jose Rayo were too much as the visiting UAB Blazers topped the DePaul men’s soccer team, 2-0, on Saturday afternoon at Wish Field. The Blue Demons put together some offensive opportunities in each half, but came up empty each time.
Rayo scored his first goal of the afternoon in the 25th minute to give the Blazers the early lead. Rogerio Oliveira found Rayo all alone in front of the DePaul goal and set up Rayo for a blast into the upper left corner for his third goal of the season.
The Blue Demons made two attempts to even the score, but UAB keeper Jeremy Drake came up big both times. Patrick Vyncke’s header off a corner kick found and Drake and then he stuffed a Vyncke shot with a diving save.
DePaul started the second half with a bang as Mike Fenton fired a shot from the left side of the box. The ball was headed toward the upper right corner, but Drake was there again to knock it away.
In the 70th minute, the Blazers set up a free kick on the right side. Leandro de Oliveira served the ball toward the near post and Rayo was there to head it past DePaul’s Michael Timlin to put the Blazers up 2-0.
UAB outshot the Blue Demons, 19-15, in the match including an 11-7 advantage in the second half. Timlin finished the game with nine saves while Drake was credited with five stops.
DePaul closes the home portion of the 2003 schedule on Friday, Oct. 31 against East Carolina. Kickoff is set for 2 p.m. with the Blue Demons seniors honored prior to the match. The Blue Demons look to make a run for the Conference USA Tournament with the East Carolina match and games at Cincinnati and South Florida.
