CHICAGO- Despite out hitting their opponent; the DePaul Blue Demon volleyball squad fell to the UAB Blazers in four-games (29-31, 28-30, 30-17, 25-30) Friday evening, at the DePaul Athletic Center. The Blue Demons fall to 11-17 overall, and 3-8 in Conference USA, while the Blazer improve to 14-14 overall, and 6-4 in C-USA.
“I am disappointed with tonight performance,” Head Coach Dawn Dockstader said. “We have so much to riding on these last three games, but we allowed UAB to come to our house and out play us. We have to regroup and get a win against USF tomorrow.”
DePaul came out swinging but were unable to hold off the Blazers. As a team the Blue Demons tallied 67 kills and a .277 attack percentage. Junior setter, Amie West was busy feeding the Blue Demon offense talling 60 assists on the night. Junior Janet Goreham, led the offense with a season high 19 kills and a .586 attack percentage. Senior Janet Cotter and sophomore Mandy Moorberg each recorded 14 kills.
Game-one saw explosive hitting from both teams. DePaul hit .357, while UAB averaged a .325 attack percentage. The two teams would go point for point, neither team taking the lead by more than two points throughout the match. The Blazers would pull out the win, 31-29.
DePaul would lead by as many as seven points in game-two, but were unable to string together rallies and allowed UAB to creep back into the game. The Blazers would tie the game at 26 on a kill from Bilun Gunal. The Blazers never look back, winning the game 30-28.
The Blue Demons came back from the break fired up. They controlled the tempo in game-three holding the Blazers to a negative .105 hitting percentage. DePaul would take the first six points and continue to build on their lead. The Blue Demons went on an 11 point run to win game-three.
DePaul could not take their momentum from game-three into game-four. They lost game-four and the match 25-30.
Martina Shields lead the UAB Blazers with 17 kills and 10 digs. Setter, Bilun Gunal notched 49 assists.
The Blue Demons will be back in action Saturday evening, taking on C-USA opponent USF at 7:00pm at the DePaul Athletic Center.
