Volleyball Hosts Blue Demon Invitational

On Tuesday, September 16th the Blue Demons extinguished the Illinois-Chicago Flames in convincing style (30-23, 30-14, 30-18). Holding UIC to only 14 points in game one was the lowest point total the Blue Demons has held an opponent. DePaul has held their opponent to under 20 points in a single game on five occasions.
The Blue Demons were lead by senior middle Lara Marks who physically dominated the Flames. Marks tallied 10 kills on 16 attempts and did not have one error. Marks left the arena with a season and career high .625 hitting percentage.
The Blue Demons lead C-USA in blocks per game, averaging 2.65. Last week DePaul out blocked their opponents 40.5 to 30 averaging 2.89 blocks per game. Lara Marks leads the Blue Demons with 49 blocks on the season; she averages 1.32 blocks per game.
Defensively, DePaul has more digs per match; than eight of their ten opponents. DePaul has out dug their opponents 640 to 557. Ellen Hayes, Janet Cotter, Amy Holmes and Amie West have each tallied 100 or more digs for the Blue Demons this season.
Junior Amie West moved up to forth on DePaul’s all-time career assist list last weekend at Drake Invitational. West has 1,787 career assists.
Sniffing out the RedHawks (4-7)
This week the RedHawks lost a four-game match to instate rival
DePaul will have to be on its toes during all of the RedHawks serves throughout their match on Friday, September 19th. The RedHawks set an ace record in a four-game win over Hofstra on September 13th, they served up 23 aces.
The RedHawks are lead by senior, Tara Buroker. Buroker averages 3.47 kills per game, 2.58 digs per game and leads the RedHawks with 168.0 points.
This will be the fifth time the Blue Demons will face the RedHawks. DePaul leads the series 3-1.
Holding Back the Jaguars (4-4)
This will be DePaul’s second look at IUPUI this season. The two teams first matched up at the Moorehead Invitational on August 30th. The Blue Demons lost that match with Jaguars in four games (25-30, 30-32, 30-22, 25-30).
DePaul will have to keep a lid on IUPUI best player, Rebekah Palikan. Palikan averages 5.5 kills, 1.37 blocks ad 3.21 digs per game. She was named the Mid-Continent Conference Offensive Player of the week, September 2nd and Defensive Player, September 8th.
Keeping a Watch on the Volunteers (7-2)
This is the first time that the Lady Vols and the Blue Demons have faced off since 1977. DePaul won the match 2-1.
The Lady Vols are a young team, having no seniors on the roster; but return four starters from their 20-win season in 2002. The Lady Vols are lead by sophomore middle, Kristen Andre. Andre averages 3.24 kills per game and owns a .417 hitting percentage on the season.

As a team DePaul leads C-USA in blocks per game with 2.65. Senior Lara Marks leads the Blue Demons with 1.32 blocks per game. Junior Janet Goreham is not far behind blocking 1.03 balls per game.
Getting Down on the Ball
As a team DePaul is second in the conference in digs per game. On average, DePaul is getting down on 17.50 balls per game. There are four Blue Demons that have 100 or more digs for the season, Janet Cotter (136), Amy Holmes (117), Ellen Hayes (124) and Amie West (100).
Balls on the Wood
DePaul has been successful this season attacking the ball. As a team they hold a .249 hitting percentage, while holding their opponents to only a .187 hitting percentage. Senior Janet Cotter leads the Blue Demons with 131 kills and averages 3.64 kills per game.
Honor Roll
August 31, at the Morehead State Invitational, senior middle Lara Marks was named to the All-Tournament Team.
September 6, at the Illini Classic senior outside hitter Janet Cotter was named to the All-Tournament Team. She tallied 29 kills and 37 digs on the weekend.
September 13, at the Drake Bulldog Invite the Blue Demons had three players named to the All-tournament team. Mandy Moorberg and Amie West were named to the All-Tournament team after their outstanding performances. Moorberg had 52 kills, 29 digs and one block assist on the weekend. West had 157 assists, 29 digs one solo block and assisted on six blocks. West’s 157 assists on the weekend placed her number four on DePaul’s All-time career assist list. West now has 1,751 career assists.
The Bulldog invitational also marked the first time that Red-Shirt freshman, Ellen Hayes has been given tournament honors. Hayes was named the tournament’s most valuable libero. Hayes successfully got down on 39 digs during the tournament.
Setting People Up
Junior Amie West has engraved her name into the DePaul history books with her “setting” performances this season. West has 448 assists this season and 1,787 career assists. 1,787 career assits places her forth on the Blue Demon career assist list.

The Returnees:
DePaul welcomes back nine letter winners. The squad is lead by seniors, Lara Marks, Janet Cotter and Meg Griffin. The Blue Demons will also look for leadership from juniors Amy West and Janet Goreham. Other returnees include, Amy Holmes, Mandy Moreberg, Tara Pulaski and Ellen Hayes.
Newcomers:
The Blue Demons welcome five newcomers to the 2003 squad. Morgan Ingersoll, Jamie Klosterman, Sasha Cherner and Aly Zavitz, will all compete for time on the outside. Denae Gibson is another fresh face on the squad, she will be seeking time at the middle position.
100 Wins:
Head Coach Dawn Dockstader is on her way to her 100th win as the DePaul head coach. After the Blue Demons defeated Illinois-Chicago on Tuesday, Dockstader compiled her 94th win. This is her seventh year as the DePaul head coach.
New Point System:
In a new system adopted by the Conference USA volleyball coaches, each player accumulates points for kills, block solos and assists and service aces. To calculate a players total points, please use the following formula: Kills + Solo Blocks + Service Aces. (Block Assists count as ˝ point)
