CHICAGO – A late goal by Memphis’ Dayton O’Brien gave the visiting Tigers a 2-1 win over DePaul on Friday afternoon. John Partyka tied the match in the second half for his third goal of the season. With the win, Memphis remained on top of the Conference USA standings.
Memphis (9-3-0, 5-1-0 C-USA) took a 1-0 lead in the 18th when Brad Whitsitt and John Reilly hooked up on a nice goal. Whitsitt fired in a cross from the left side and Whitsitt one-timed it to the near post just out of the reach of DePaul’s Brian Allen.
Following a hand ball in the penalty box, Partyka lined up and tied the match at 57:00 with his third goal of the season.
Both teams played even from that point in a spirited second half until O’Brien lined up for a free kick from the top of the box. O’Brien shot found its way through the DePaul defense and to the back of the net for the eventual game-winner at 79:52. It was O’Brien’s fifth goal of the season.
DePaul (2-10-3, 0-5-1 C-USA) was outshot, 14-6, while staying winless for the eighth straight game.
The Blue Demons step out of Conference USA action for a Sunday afternoon match against Wisconsin. The game is the second of a soccer doubleheader and is scheduled to start at 2:30 p.m.
