TAMPA, Fla.- The DePaul volleyball team dropped a three-game (30-27, 30-23, 30-23) match to Conference USA opponent USF Saturday afternoon at the Corral. The loss drops the Blue Demons to 8-13 overall and 1-4 in C-USA, USF improves to 4-12 and 2-4 in league play.
“This is the best 4-12 team I have seen,” head coach Dawn Dockstader said. “We had one of our best passing performances of the season but were unable to generate those passes into kills. We are capable of having an explosive offense, but today we could not find it.”
The Blue Demons ended with match with a .102 attack percentage, committing 22 errors in 157 attempts. Senior middle blocker, Janet Goreham led the offense with 15 kills and a .268 attack percentage.
“Janet had another solid performance today and was able to dominate the middle in the first two games but came up short in the third game when we really needed her,” Dockstader said.
The Blue Demons built leads throughout the match, but only to have the USF offense storm back and come from behind in each of the three-games.
Neither the Blue Demons nor the Bulls could take control of the first game; each team had the lead only to give it back to other team. Tied at 27 apiece, the Bulls were able to seal the first game on two DePaul errors and a kill from Michelle Stalbaum.
Stalbaum paced all players with match high 17 kills, and a .286 hitting percentage.
The Blue Demons took an early lead in game two, going up 4-2 but stalled and allowed the Bulls to go on 8-2 run. The Bulls never looked back and won game-two, 30-23.
The Blue Demons energized from the break built a 19-9 lead in the third game. However, the Bulls put together an impressive 21-4 run to take the game and the match.
“I am really pleased with how the team took to Amy Holmes as the setter,” Dockstader said. “Amy showed great leadership all weekend and put together two good setting performances."
Holmes finished the match with 28 assists and led the Blue Demons with 20 digs.
The Blue Demons will return home next weekend to take on TCU and Houston on Friday and Saturday at the DePaul Athletic Center. Both matches are slated to begin 7:00 p.m.
