Volleyball Drops Five Game Heartbreaker

GREENVILLE, NC- Amy Holmes recorded a double-double, registering 50-assists and 21-digs but it was not enough as DePaul fell to East Carolina in five games (22-30, 30-26, 31-33, 30-27, 15-5) Friday evening at the Minges Coliseum. The Blue Demons fall to 12-17 overall and 5-7 in C-USA, while the Pirates improve to 11-16, 5-7 C-USA.
DePaul won game-one decisively, 30-22. Junior outside hitter, Mandy Moorberg led the Blue Demon attack recoding six of their 17 kills. Holmes served DePaul its biggest lead of the game, serving for five consecutive Blue Demon points. During the five-point swing, Holmes served an ace, freshman Aly Zavits added a kill and the Blue Demons capitalized on three Pirate hitting errors. DePaul went on to win game-one, 30-22.
The second game was much tighter, as the Blue Demons rallied back from a 16-22 deficit to tie the game at 24 apiece on a Pirate error. However, DePaul ran out of steam, dropping the game 30-26.
The Blue Demons found themselves in a hole during game-three, facing game-point and down 27-29, Moorberg came through with a huge kill. Sophomore Morgan Ingersoll followed with a putaway of her own, to tie the score at 29-all. Ingersoll found the wood again to give the Blue Demons game-point at 32-31. Sophomore defensive specialist Jamie Klosterman’s served up and ace to give DePaul the 33-31 victory.
East Carolina was in a must win situation coming into game-four and never gave the Blue Demons and opportunity to get into the game. The Pirates won game four, 30-27 sending the match to a fifth game, which they ultimately won, 15-5.
Ingersoll led all players with 20 kills, while ECU’s Johanna Bertini led the defense with 25 digs.
The Blue Demons will be back in action, tomorrow evening in Charlotte. DePaul will take on the 49ers at 6:00 p.m. (CST).
