Blue Demons Down Southern Miss, 3-1

CHICAGO- DePaul senior middle blocker, Janet Goreham led all players with 22 kills and helped the Blue Demons defeat Southern Miss 3-1 (26-30, 32-30, 30-23, 30-25), Friday evening in Conference USA volleyball action. The win improves the Blue Demons to 11-16 on the season and 4-6 in league play. Southern Miss fell to 5-19 and 0-10 in C-USA.
“I am very proud of my seniors, Amy Holmes and Janet Goreham,” DePaul head coach Dawn Dockstader said. “Both Amy and Janet put together impressive numbers and vocally led the team on the floor tonight.”
Holmes, the Blue Demon setter, finished the match with 54 assists, nine digs and six kills. Goreham finished with a .429 attack percentage, 15 digs and seven total blocks.
Southern Miss outside hitter Jazzmine Stephens tallied eight of her 21 kills in game-one to help the Golden Eagle to a 30-26 win.
DePaul was down 11-17 in game-two, but chipped away at the Southern Miss lead. Morgan Ingersoll’s ace at 20-21 pulled the Blue Demons within one and a Golden Eagle hitting error evened the score at 22 apiece. The two teams tied four times, before a Goreham- Holmes’ block ended the game at 32-30.
The Blue Demons out blocked the Golden Eagles in game-three, recording six total blocks. Holmes led the Blue Demons with four total blocks and helped DePaul to a 30-23 victory.
Sophomore Denae Gibson made the difference for DePaul in game-four, tallying seven kills for a .500 attack percentage. The Blue Demons won game-four 30-25.
“I give a lot of credit to Southern Miss, they played incredible defense, Dockstader added.
The Golden Eagles finished with 72 total digs and four players in double-digit dig totals. Morgan Johnson led the Southern Miss defense with 20 digs.
DePaul libero Ellen Hayes led all players with 26 digs.
The Blue Demons will be back in action tomorrow evening, facing Tulane at
