CHICAGO – For the second time in four days, the DePaul men’s soccer team lost in double overtime by the score of 2-1. On Sunday, the club fell by the score of 2-1 to Northwestern in double overtime only to repeat the defeat on Wednesday at UIC. Wednesday's match also marked the fourth overtime game this season.
UIC (1-5-0) got on the board first early in the game as Pavle Dundjer took a direct free kick from 30 yards out in front of the goal and knocked it in at 12:35.
The Blue Demons put the pressure on and broke through in the 75th minute. Julian Chill's corner kick found John Kornfeld who sent a shot from 30 yards to the upper left corner past UIC keeper Ross Cain to tie the match at 1-1. For Kornfeld, it was his first collegiate goal while Chill was credited with his team-high third assist of the year.
Neither team was able to score over the final 15 minutes as the Blue Demons totaled 13 shots to 10 for the Flames through the first 90 minutes of play.
After a scoreless first overtime period that saw both teams take two shots, Stipan Vedric and Dundjer combined to find Kenneth Nightingale on the left side. Nightingale gathered the ball and sent shot just past a diving Brian Allen, where it found the back of the net for the golden goal at 107:38.
Allen finished the match with three saves while Cain totaled seven. DePaul (1-4-1) outshot the Flames, 15-14, and held a 5-2 advantage on corner kicks.
The Blue Demons go on the road this weekend for a pair of matches at the Dayton Flyer Classic in Dayton, Ohio. DePaul takes on Evansville on Friday afternoon before playing Wright State on Sunday. The Blue Demons have now played four overtime matches in the last five games.
