Volleyball Closes out the Blue Demon Invitational in Third Place

CHICAGO- The DePaul volleyball team finished the second day of the Blue Demon Invitational, 1-1. The Blue Demons lost a five-game heartbreaker to tournament champions Xavier in the afternoon, but came away with a 3-0 victory over
DePaul and Xavier battled in one of the hardest fought matches of the Blue Demon Invitational on Saturday afternoon. The battle, a five-game grudge match, was ultimately won Xavier, but not without a tough fight from the Blue Demons.
DePaul recorded a better hitting percent and tallied more blocks, but it was Xavier’s defense that won the match. The Musketeers finished the match with team total 86 digs. Xavier’s Danielle Skrajewski led all players with 21 digs.
Xavier took a quite game-one, 30-22. The Musketeers led all statistical categories and finished the match with a .417 attack percentage.
The Blue Demons roared back in game-two, taking the game 30-27. DePaul was down 23-26 before going on an eight-one run. The Blue Demons were propelled by Janet Goreham’s three kills and five Xavier errors.
DePaul was up 28-24 in game three, but was unable to close out the match. The Musketeers hammered away at the Blue Demon lead capitalizing on two DePaul hitting errors and knocked down three kills and an ace to take game-three, 30-28.
DePaul, in a must win situation in game-four, hit a staggering .267 and registered 18 kills. The Musketters and Blue Demons teetered back and forth, knotting 12 ties and five lead changes, but it was DePaul who came out victorious, 30-27. Goreham led all players with seven kills, including the game winning kill.
DePaul and Xavier were tied a six apiece before the Musketeers were able to take advantage of five Blue Demon hitting errors and take a 13-8 lead in game-five. Amy Holmes served three points for the Blue Demons, pulling them within two points. However, it was Xavier’s Carley Horvath who ended the match with a kill fed by setter Molly Martin.
Xavier’s Kate Duckek led all players with 23 kills and a .415 hitting percentage. Janet Goreham paced DePaul with 21 kills and 20 digs.
In the last match of the tournament, DePaul toppled
The Blue Demons came out in game-one with fire in their eyes. Goreham was able shut down Western offense, finishing the game with a team-high six kills, seven digs and two block assists.
DePaul hit .240 as a team but it was their defense that shined in game-two. The Blue Demons were able to get down on 17 total digs. Ellen Hayes and Amy Holmes registered five digs apiece.
The Blue Demons and Western kept game-three close early, however DePaul pulled away to take the game and the match, 30-23. Moorberg tallied seven kills and a .429 attack percentage to lead the Blue Demons to victory.
Western’s Kali Landis recorded a team high 13 kills and a .370 attack percentage.
DePaul returns to action next weekend, traveling to the IPFW Invitational in
