FORT WAYNE, Ind.- The DePaul volleyball team fell to IPFW, 3-0 (30-26, 30-26, 30-28) in the final match of the IPFW Invitational Saturday evening at the Gates Sports Center. The Blue Demons (7-8) finished the tournament in third place, he Mastodons (9-5) finished in second place and St. John’s was crowned champions.
“Our record is representative of how we are playing matches, we are keeping the matches close but we are not able to finish them out, which is why we are one game under .500,” Head Coach Dawn Dockstader said. “We need our seniors to step up and lead, they need to consistently help us close out our matches.”
The Blue Demons were never able to get in tonight’s match. They dropped the first two games by identical scores, 30-26 and the final game 30-28.
DePaul hit well as a team recording a .223 attack percentage and 46 kills, but it was the Mastodons who hit better. IPFW notched a .307 attack percentage and 56 kills. The Mastodons finished the match with three hitters in double-digit kill totals and Fabiana Souza led all players with 19 kills, she also notched 16 digs.
The Blue Demons were led by senior middle blocker Janet Goreham, who notched 15 kills for a .538 attack percentage.
Mandy Moorberg was named to the All-Tournament team after averaging 3.82 kills per game, 34 digs and a team high six service aces over the weekend. This is the first time this season Moorberg has been named to an All-Tournament roster.
“Mandy played excellent this weekend, she turned a corner and is playing the way we need to, Dockstader said. “She worked hard in practice last week and it carried over into the matches. She is becoming an excellent outside hitter and was able to pull through in clutch situations this weekend.”
The Blue Demons will be back in action this week, traveling to Valparaiso on Wednesday, September 29. The match is scheduled to begin at 7:00 p.m. at the Valparaiso Athletics-Recreation Center.
