Blue Demons Fall in Five Games

VALPARAISO, Ind.- The DePaul volleyball team dropped a five-game match (27-30, 30-19, 21-30, 30-20-, 3-15) to Valparaiso, Wednesday evening at the Valparaiso Athletic-Recreation Center. The Blue Demons fall to 7-9 on the season while the Crusaders improve to 12-3.
The Blue Demons were up 17-11 in the first game but allowed the Crusaders to creep back into the match, and take the lead at 25-23. Following a DePaul timeout, seniors Janet Goreham and Amy Holmes along with sophomore Morgan Ingersoll got the Blue Demons back into the match. The trio combined for four kills, an ace and two block assists. DePaul took game one, 30-27.
The second through fifth games were decided on team hitting percentage. The Crusaders who won game two 30-19 nailed down a .308 hitting percentage and held DePaul to .158 attack percentage.
One the other-hand, game-three was won by the Blue Demon defense. DePaul held the Crusaders to a .000 attack percentage and 21 points.
Valparaiso won games four and five, combining for 30 kills and a .380 attack percentage. The Blue Demons were held to 14 kills and committed 11 errors for a .045 attack percentage.
Defensively, DePaul sophomore Ellen Hayes led all players with a career high 30 digs. Offensively, Holmes had a match high 19 putaways.
The Blue Demons open the Conference USA portion of their schedule this weekend, hosting Louisville and Cincinnati on Friday and Saturday at the DePaul Athletic Center. Both matches are scheduled to begin at 7:00 p.m.
