CHICAGO – A golden goal by USF’s Rodrigo Hidalgo in the first overtime period gave the visiting Bulls a 1-0 victory in the Conference USA opener for both teams. The Blue Demon defense held its own with the No. 17 team in the nation before allowing the late goal.
Neither team could find the net as a windy afternoon knocked the ball out of the air. USF had an early scoring opportunity as Simon Schoendorf hit the post in the third minute of the match.
Through 90 minutes the score remained at 0-0 with the Bulls managing nine shots to just one for DePaul. With a free kick from about 45 yards away, Schoendorf served the ball into the penalty box where Hidalgo gathered it and beat DePaul keeper Brian Allen for the game-winner at 93:23.
The match was the second straight overtime game for the Blue Demons as the tied Valparaiso, 1-1, on Sunday. DePaul looks to get back in the win column this weekend at the Best Western Lakeside Classic in Evanston, Ill. The Blue Demons take on UC Irvine on Friday and host Northwestern on Sunday.
