UW-Green Bay 3, DePaul 1
CHICAGO – Despite getting 16 kills from junior outside hitter Morgan Ingersoll and senior outside hitter Mandy Moorberg, the DePaul volleyball team dropped a hard fought four game (30-23, 30-27, 30-32, 31-29) match to UW-Green Bay, Tuesday at the DePaul Athletic Center. UW-Green Bay snapped a three match slide to improve to 11-10 on the season, while the Blue Demons fall to 3-16.
The Phoenix offense came out blazing in game one, recording 20 kills and a .366 attack percentage. UW-Green Bay jumped out to a 13-15 lead, but relinquished it as freshman Mandi Caputo served up four straight points to give the Blue Demons a 17-15 advantage. The Phoenix offense stymied the Blue Demon attack, putting together a 12-2 run to put game one out of reach. UW-Green Bay took game one 30-23.
The second game was one of the hardest fought games of the match, as the lead was exchanged four times and seven other times the game was knotted in a tie. Tied at 24, UW-Green Bay forced the Blue Demons to make four errors in final points and took game two 30-27.
The Blue Demons recorded their best offensive effort in game three, recording 19 kills to register a .250 attack percentage. Ingersoll and Moorberg each notched six kills. Either team was able to take control of the game early as they were both plagued with service errors. Tied at eight the Blue Demons strung together a 5-2 run to pull in front but the Phoenix kept on chipping away at the lead and eventually tied the game at 24. The teams continued to knot the score as the Blue Demons faced match point three times but an Phoenix attack error allowed DePaul to take game three, 32-30.
DePaul jumped out a 10-7 lead before sophomore middle blocker Stacy Pando served up seven straight points to give the Blue Demons a 17-7 advantage. UW-Green Bay again chipped away at the lead tying game four at 27 and won the game and match on Blue Demon attack error.
Jackie Rosen led UW-Green Bay and all players with 20 kills. Defensively, Sarah Rauen led all players with 25 digs and Rosen added 12.
Freshman Rochelle Meulemans had a career day for the Blue Demons, dishing out 39 assists and picked up 14 digs. The freshman also contributed four kills and two block assists. Redshirt freshman Maureen Zigulich led the Blue Demon defense with 20 digs.
The Blue Demons will return to BIG EAST conference play this weekend welcoming Georgetown and USF to the DePaul Athletic Center. DePaul will tangle with the Hoyas (5-14, 1-6 BIG EAST) on Saturday and the Bulls (3-14, 1-6 BIG EAST) on Sunday, both matches are scheduled to begin at 2:00 p.m.
