Georgetown 3, DePaul 0
CHICAGO – Junior outside hitter Morgan Ingersoll led all players with 18 kills, but it was not enough as the DePaul volleyball team fell to Georgetown 3-0 (30-22, 30-28, 30-24) Saturday at the DePaul Athletic Center. The Hoyas snapped a five match slide and improved to 6-15, 2-6 BIG EAST, while the Blue Demons fell to 3-17, 0-7 BIG EAST.
Georgetown started the match on fire, as its offense recorded a .257 attack percentage and their defense was guided at the net by Katherine Niesen, who recorded four block assists. The Hoyas found themselves down 3-0 but responded with a 7-1 run and took DePaul's momentum. Georgetown's offense continued to roll as they won the first game 30-20.
The Blue Demons had their best offensive effort in game two, registering 15 kills and a match high .294 attack percentage. Ingersoll led all players with seven kills and a .385 hitting percentage while freshman outside hitter Caitlin Callaghan added four kills. DePaul stormed out to a 22-13 advantage, but costly errors allowed the Hoyas to tie the game at 26. Georgetown continued to capitalize on DePaul errors as the final two points were awarded on Blue Demon setting errors. The Hoyas won game two 30-28.
Georgetown took a decisive, 20-12 advantage in game three, but the Blue Demons chipped away at the lead as freshman Mandi Caputo served up six straight points to pull DePaul within two. Georgetown responded with a 4-1 run and gave themselves a comfortable 25-20 advantage. The Hoyas held onto win game three 30-24.
Georgetown's offense recorded 44 kills and had two players, Rachel Nelson and Jessica George finish with double digit kills. Nelson led the Hoyas with 11, while George added 10. They Hoyas defense was guided by Niesen, who finished the match with eight block assists.
DePaul's defense was anchored by freshman libero Maureen Zigulich, who led all players with 20 digs, with 10 coming during the final game. Caputo chipped in nine digs and 13 assists for the match.
The Blue Demons will return to the court tomorrow, welcoming USF to the DePaul Athletic Center for a 2:00 p.m. BIG EAST match.
