CINCINNATI, Ohio – A ‘golden goal’ by Cincinnati’s Kenny Anaba propelled the Bearcats to a 2-1 double-overtime win over the DePaul Blue Demons in men’s BIG EAST soccer action on Wednesday night.
Cincinnati (10-5-2, 6-2-2 BIG EAST) scored the match’s first goal just before halftime. Tony Morelli flicked a header in the box to Mike Dwyer. Dwyer volleyed the header past DePaul keeper Brian Visser from six yards out to give the Bearcats a 1-0 lead in the 41st minute.
The Blue Demons answered as Adam Hermsen scored his team-high fifth goal of the season just over a minute into the second half. The equalizer came as the Cincinnati defense attempted to clear the ball. Hermsen took an errant pass just inside the box and fired a shot past Cincinnati keeper Mike Vessells to even the score at 1-1.
The score remained tied at 1-1 through the remainder of the second half. In the first overtime period, the Bearcats took the only two shots. In the second overtime, Kneyy Anaba scored the game-winner at 105:39 off an assist from Omar Cummings. Cummings brought the ball up the middle of the field and flicked a pass over the top of the defense. As Anaba raced in on the ball, DePaul keeper Brian Visser left his line. Anaba won the race to the ball and tapped it out of the air past Visser for the game-winner.
Visser finished the match with six saves while the Bearcats outshot the Blue Demons, 18-7.
DePaul (3-10-2, 1-7-1 BIG EAST) hosts Louisville in the final home match of the regular season on Saturday. Kickoff at Wish Field is set for 1 p.m.
