PHILADELPHIA – Needing a win for a berth in the BIG EAST Tournament, the DePaul men's soccer team came up on the short end of a 3-1 score against Villanova. Eric Hermosillo scored his second goal of the season to tie the match at 1-1 in the first half, but the Blue Demons allowed the Wildcats to score two more goals.
Villanova (6-7-3, 6-4-1 BIG EAST) scored first in the 16th minute when Brett Stassfurth's serve on a corner kick found Farris Fakhoury for a diving header and the 1-0 advantage.
Hermosillo tied the match for DePaul as the Blue Demons evened the score on their own corner kick opportunity. Luke Rojo started the action with the kick into the box. It bounced around the Villanova defense to Hermosillo and he fired a shot from 12 yards that found the net at 39:46. In the match, the Blue Demons took seven corner kicks compared to six for the Wildcats.
Just before intermission, Villanova scored the eventual game-winner. Billy Whiteside took a pass from Matt Sleece and beat DePaul's Brian Visser with less than a minute left in the first half. Whiteside's first goal of the season came at 44:29.
The Wildcats added an insurance goal late in the match when Mike Del Guercio scored at 81:57 off an assist from Whiteside.
