DEKALB, Ill. (AP) - Todd Peterson and Anthony Maestranzi scored 16 of Northern Illinois' final 22 points as the Huskies held off DePaul for a 77-68 victory on Monday night.
The win was the second in as many years for Northern Illinois (2-1) over the Blue Demons, who fell to 1-2.
With the game tied at 59, Maestranzi hit from 3-point range, followed by a 3-pointer from DePaul's Draelon Burns. After Burns' shot at 3:32, the Blue Demons went scoreless for nearly three minutes.
"(NIU) did a great job of executing," first-year DePaul coach Jerry Wainwright said. "We had shots we needed to make but couldn't down the stretch."
Center James Hughes scored a team-high 17 points and grabbed six rebounds for the Huskies. Maestranzi finished the game with 14 points, while Peterson added 12.
Sammy Mejia finished with 12 points to lead the Blue Demons. Karron Clarke scored nine points and added eight rebounds for DePaul.
DePaul is in action again on Wednesday when Creighton comes to the Allstate Arena for a 7:30 p.m. game on WCKG (105.9 FM).
