DePaul Names Gary DeCesare Men's Basketball Associate Head Coach

CHICAGO -- Gary DeCesare has been named DePaul’s Associate Head Basketball Coach it was announced today by new Blue Demon coach Jerry Wainwright.

DeCesare (pronounced DE CESAR) comes to the Blue Demons after spending the past three seasons as an assistant coach on Wainwright’s staff at Richmond. While with the Spiders, he helped the program to 50 wins and berths in both the 2004 NCAA Tournament and 2003 NIT.
A proven recruiter with excellent game management capabilities, DeCesare enjoyed a standout prep coaching career in New York City before joining the college ranks.
DeCesare compiled a 286-142 record (.668 winning percentage) in 16 seasons at the helm of St. Raymond’s School in the Bronx. In his first season as head coach (1986), he led the Ravens to a 20-6 mark, including the New York Archdiocesan Championship. Following that campaign, he led the national powerhouse to four New York City Championships (1991, 1993, 2000, and 2001) and two state championships (1993, 2001).
In addition, DeCesare was named New York State Coach of the Year on three occasions (1987, 1991, and 2001). He was also selected the 1993 Kodak Boys Coach of the Year and was a four-time coach of the year by the New York Daily News, New York Post and New York Newsday.
Under DeCesare, the St. Raymond’s program produced more than 30 Division I basketball players. The list includes three McDonald’s All-Americans - Majestic Mapp (Virginia), Julius Hodge (
A graduate of St. Raymond’s and Iona College (N.Y.), DeCesare was the head coach for the East team at USA Basketball's 2002 Men's Youth Development Festival. He served as executive director of the New York Raven Summer Basketball League (1996-02) while also serving as Director of adidas ABCD Basketball Camp (1993-02).
