Volleyball Struggles with St. John's

CHICAGO – The St. John's volleyball team extended is winning streak to 13 matches with a 3-0 (30-19, 30-23, 30-24) victory over DePaul, Friday in BIG EAST volleyball action at McGrath Arena.  The win improves the visiting Red Storm to 22-1 and 7-0 in conference play, while the Blue Demons fall to 5-18 and 0-7 in the league.

St. John's had four players finish with double-digit kill totals on its way to a .328 attack percentage and 62 kills in the match.  Hui Ping Huang led all players with 14 kills and a .500 attack percentage, while Lotoya Blunt, Patti Hardimon and Caitlin Rimgaila each tallied 12 kills apiece.

Game one saw the Blue Demons and Red Storm battle through five early ties.  With the game tied at six, St. John's offense caught fire and finished the first frame with a match-high 23 kills and a .513 attack percentage. Blunt led the Red Storm's attack with seven kills in the first set.

DePaul took a 10-9 lead in game two, when senior Morgan Ingersoll terminated the ball from freshman setter Sarah Cullen.  The Blue Demons continued to build on their lead as the Red Storm committed back-to-back errors, and two additional Ingersoll kills gave DePaul a 14-11 advantage. The two teams traded sideouts until St. John's took the lead for good on a Blue Demon attack error at the 17-16 mark.  The Red Storm closed out game two on a 13-7 run and won the set, 30-23.

The Blue Demons kept the final frame tight as they tied the game at 18, but the Red Storm would never relinquish control of the game as they won 30-24.  Hardimon and Rimgaila led the floor with five kills apiece in the final set.

Ingersoll led the Blue Demons both offensively and defensively, finishing with 10 kills and nine digs. Cullen dished out 25 assists.

The Blue Demons return to the court on Sunday when they host BIG EAST foe Connecticut.  The first serve is scheduled for 2 p.m. at McGrath Arena.
