DePaul Tops Lewis in Exhibition Opener

CHICAGO – Five players in double-figures led DePaul to a 93-83 win over Lewis on Wednesday night at McGrath Arena. Allie Quigley led the Blue Demons with 25 points while Caprice Smith added a 19-point, 12-rebound double-double. DePaul takes on the Chicago Challengers on Saturday to wrap-up the exhibition season.
The Blue Demons took a 19-11 lead on a pair of free throws by Quigley seven minutes into the game. Lewis cut the deficit to 21-19 on a bucket by Mary Moskal with 10:34 on the clock before a Smith jumper pushed the Blue Demons back ahead at 33-26 with just over six minutes remaining.
Lewis didn't go away as two free throws by Moskal brought the Flyers to within two points with just over four minutes until halftime. DePaul finished the half with nine of the final 13 points between the two teams to take a 43-36 lead at intermission.
Less than three minutes into the second period, the Blue Demons scored eight straight points to open up a 15-point advantage. The lead grew to 18 points with 14:03 left when Sam Quigley scored on a layup for a 61-43 Blue Demon lead.
The two teams traded baskets over the next four minutes when a jumper and three-pointer on consecutive possessions by Missy Mitidiero increased the lead to 77-54 with just over nine minutes left. Erin Cattell followed with a bucket to give the Blue Demons a commanding 25-point lead at 79-54.
Lewis closed the deficit to 10 points on a Moskal layup with two seconds left on the clock for the 93-83 final. The Flyers played the final 7:29 on a 28-12 run to cut the 26-point DePaul lead to the 10-point final score.
Jenna Rubino finished with 12 points and nine rebounds while Mitidiero added a dozen points with three three-pointers. Erin Carney added 10 points, five boards and a team-high four steals. Quigley's 25 points came on 10-of-16 shooting from the field while Smith scored her 19 points on an 8-for-14 effort from the floor.
Moskal led all scorers with 30 points that included a 15-for-19 night from the free throw line. Erin Cox added 14 points for the Flyers while Brittney Diener dished out nine assists.
The Blue Demons finish the exhibition schedule on Saturday, Nov. 4, with a 5:30 p.m. game against the Chicago Challengers. The game is the first half of a DePaul basketball doubleheader as the men's team hosts Lewis at 7:30 p.m.
