CHICAGO – For the third straight season, the Blue Demons and Flames went to overtime in their annual match with the 2006 edition ending in a 0-0 tie. In the previous two meetings, Illinois-Chicago found the game-winner for the victory in extra time.
UIC (1-0-1) managed to get off 15 shots, but the DePaul defense and goalkeeper Brian Visser held off the Flames. Visser finished the match with three saves for DePaul (1-1-1) to earn his first shutout of the season and fourth of his career.
The Flames managed six shots in the first half followed by eight attempts in the second period. The lone overtime shot was by UIC in the second overtime period. All three of Visser’s saves came in the first half. The Flames also took eight corner kicks to four for the Blue Demons with each team taking four in the second half.
DePaul heads to Cincinnati for the Marriott Kingsgate Xavier Challenge this weekend. The Blue Demons take on host Xavier at 7 p.m. EST on Friday night before playing Marshall on Sunday at Noon EST. DePaul head coach Craig Blazer played collegiately at Xavier from 1987-91.
Match Notes: Nine of the 11 starters for DePaul were freshman or sophomores... eight of the 13 that saw action as a starter or substitute were freshmen... the tie ended a streak of 21 consecutive losses on the road... four of the last five DePaul-UIC matches have gone to overtime… the lone non-overtime game was a 1-0 win by DePaul in 2003… 2004 and 2005 featured 2-1 double-overtime wins for UIC while the 2002 game ended in a 2-2 draw… the series now stands at 11-9-3 in favor of the Flames… the match was the first night game in UIC soccer history.
