Blue Demons Fall at Xavier

CINCINNATI – Patrick Hopkins scored his first collegiate goal to tie the match in the second half, but the Xavier Musketeers tallied the game-winner in the 62nd minute for the 2-1 victory. It was the second match of the Marriott Kingsgate Xavier Challenge with the Blue Demons playing Marshall on Sunday.
Xavier (1-1-0) started the scoring in the 23rd minute off a goal from Toni Skudrzik. Jake Vollmer and Slav Ubiparipovic were credited with assists as Skudrzik left-footed the ball past DePaul’s Brian Visser at 22:23.
The 1-0 score held until Hopkins tied the game early in the second half. John Partyka assisted the goal at 51:35 that finished with Hopkins dropping a shot over the keeper and into the corner of the net. For Partyka, it was his second assist of the season.
Ubiparipovic tallied the game-winner 10 minutes later as he split the DePaul defense and scored the unassisted goal. The match was tightly contested as DePaul (1-2-1) attempted six shots while Xavier totaled seven attempts.
Visser finished the evening with two saves while his counterpart, Liam Curran, was credited with three stops. Each team took three corner kicks in the 90 minutes.
DePaul plays Marshall on Sunday in the first of two matches for the final day of the Marriott Kingsgate Xavier Challenge. Xavier and Western Illinois clash in the second game.
Match Notes: Nine of the 11 starters were freshman or sophomores… the Blue Demons have been outshot in the last three matches… DePaul has scored three goals in the four matches this season while allowing five scores.... DePaul head coach Craig Blazer played at Xavier from 1987-91.
