Blue Demons Top Central Arkansas

MEMPHIS, Tenn. - Senior Morgan Ingersoll led the Blue Demons with a career-high 27 kills and guided the squad to a 3-1 (30-25, 30-26, 26-30, 30-27) victory over Central Arkansas on Friday at the Memphis Tournament. The Blue Demons improve to 4-7 on season while the Sugar Bears fall to 6-6.
The Blue Demons, on a three-match win streak, were guided by their defense, which tallied 89 digs and five blocks. Freshman Sarah Cullen paced DePaul with a career-high 25 digs, and senior Ellen Hayes followed with 24. Sophomore Caitlin Callaghan and junior Stacy Pando also finished with double-digit dig totals registering 15 and 11, respectively. Pando also chipped in a team-high three block assists.
UCA jumped out to a 14-7 advantage in game one, but the Blue Demons used a 10-4 run to pull within one at 18-17. DePaul continued to claw at the Sugar Bear lead, tying the game at 22 and closing out the game on a 8-3 run. Ingersoll guided the Blue Demon's offense, notching eight of DePaul's 18 kills.
Game two saw nine ties and four lead changes, but DePaul capitalized on timely Central Arkansas errors. DePaul head coach Amy Kleyweg called a time out with her team up 27-26. After the time out the Sugar Bears committed a service error, giving the Blue Demons the serve. Senior Deane Gibson knocked down a kill and sophomore Cristina Correa won the game on a solo block.
The Sugar Bears, in a must win situation, took the third game 30-26. Outside hitter Camila Scapini led UCA with five kills.
The Blue Demons jumped out early in game four 17-12, but UCA fought back to take a 27-25 advantage. Ingersoll threw the Blue Demons on her back, registering three of her game-high seven kills in the final five points of the match. DePaul won game four 30-25.
Scapini led the Sugar Bears with 17 kills, while Brianna LaBrot led defense with 21 digs.
The Blue Demons close out the tournament on Saturday with matches against Murray State and tournament host Memphis at 11:30 a.m. and 7 p.m.
