DePaul Notches First Win of the Season

HOUSTON - The DePaul volleyball team and first year head coach Amy Kleyweg notched their first win of the 2006 season defeating Texas-San Antonio by the score of 3-1 (31-29, 24-30, 30-22, 30-22) in the finale of the Holiday Inn Select Rice Invitational. The Blue Demons (1-5) dropped their first game of the day to intrastate rival Illinois State, 3-1.
Senior Morgan Ingersoll was named to All-Tournament Team after finishing the tournament with a team-high 52 kills. Ingersoll's 21 kills and four total blocks lifted the Blue Demons against UTSA.
DePaul used a balanced attack against the Roadrunners, notching a team-high 69 kills for a .184 attack percentage. The Blue Demons had six players finished with double-digit dig totals and registered nine total blocks. Hayes led the Blue Demons with a season-high 24 digs and junior Stacy Pando notched a career high seven-total blocks.
The Blue Demons opened a 5-1 lead in game one but UTSA clawed their way back and tied the game at nine. The Roadrunners reached game-point first, but Ingersoll's back-to-back kills tied the game at 29 and the Blue Demons won the game on consecutive UTSA hitting errors.
Game two saw three ties and lead changes, but it was the Roadrunners (3-4) took the second game 30-24.
Fueled by a game two loss, the Blue Demons offense stepped up and delivered back-to-back 18 kill games and 30-22 wins.
The teams trade points in game three before the Blue Demons opened an 18-14 lead on senior Denae Gibson's kill. The Blue Demon offense continued to mess as they finished the game on a 12-8 run.
Tied at 13 in game four, Pando connected on kill to spark the Blue Demon offense as they offense rolled to their highest attack percentage (.234) of the match.
Pando finished with a career-high 17 kills and 21.0 points while freshman setter Emily McGinnis notched a career-high 58 assists.
The Blue Demons fought hard in the first match of the day, but the Redbirds thwarted DePaul's effort, taking the match 3-1 (25-30, 32-30, 30-18, 30-28). Ingersoll, Hayes and Deane Gibson led the Blue Demon's offensive effort finishing with 50 of the teams 59 kills. Ingersoll led the team with 19 kills, Hayes followed with 18 and Gibson rounded out the seniors with 13 kills.
DePaul sophomore Caitlin Callaghan and Hayes paced the field finishing with 22 and 20 digs, respectively.
Game one saw DePaul jumped out to an early lead and never looked back, taking the game 30-22. The Blue Demons jumped out to an early lead in game two, but Illinois State fought back to took the game into extra points and won 32-30.
The Redbirds (3-3) closed out the match with a 30-18 victory in game three and a 30-28 win in game four.
The Blue Demons travel to Macomb, Ill., for the Western Illinois Tournament next weekend. DePaul faces host Western Illinois on Friday and Eastern Illinois and Butler on Saturday.
