Men's Soccer Falls in BIG EAST Road Match

PISCATAWAY, N.J. – Julian Chill's first career goal tied the match in the second half, but Rutgers added the eventual game-winner just before halftime and a third goal in the second half for a 3-1 decision on Sunday afternoon. Despite dropping their fifth straight game, the Blue Demons ended their scoreless drought with the first-half goal against the Scarlet Knights.
Kevin O'Connor found the net first at 26:04 off an assist from Chris Moore to give the home team the 1-0 lead. That advantage lasted just 58 seconds as Chill's goal tied the game at 1-1. The junior dribbled through a pair of defenders and beat Rutgers keeper Matt Vanoekel for the equalizer.
With the match tied and the clock winding down towards halftime, Rutgers (4-5-0, 2-3-0 BIG EAST) found the net for the eventual game-winner. Bart Koffeman took a cross from Sean Cameron and beat DePaul goalkeeper Brian Visser at 41:12.
The Scarlet Knights added an insurance goal in the 68th minute when Adam Sternberger scored on header from an assist by Chris Moore. Rutgers’ third goal of the afternoon came at 67:38.
Visser played 68 minutes in goal for the Blue Demons and finished the afternoon with five saves. Erik Sorenson made his first appearance of the season and held the Scarlet Knights scoreless in the final 22 minutes. In the match, Rutgers outshot DePaul, 18-6, and took six corner kicks to one for the Blue Demons.
DePaul returns to Wish Field for a Wednesday afternoon match against USF. The Blue Demons and Bulls kickoff at 3 p.m. in Lincoln Park. Next weekend has Villanova visiting Wish Field for a Saturday afternoon contest.
Match Notes: DePaul ended a four-match scoreless streak with the goal on Sunday… the Blue Demons have dropped five straight matches… Julian Chill's goal was the first of his career... Rutgers has won both meetings in the series… a year ago, the Scarlet Knights claimed a 3-1 win at Wish Field.
