Blue Demons Finish the 2007 Season

CHICAGO The DePaul volleyball team finished the 2007 season with a 3-0 (30-22, 30-21, 30-21) BIG EAST Conference loss to Cincinnati Sunday at McGrath Arena. The Blue Demons finish the season 7-21 and 2-12 in conference play while the Bearcats (18-10, 9-5) advance to the BIG EAST Conference Championship next week in Milwaukee, Wis.
The Bearcats dominated the match with their proficient hitting as they swung for a .346 attack percentage and tallied 47 kills. Jessie Nevitt led all players with 18 kills and a sizzling .680 attack percentage. Defensively, the Bearcats stuffed 11 balls with Lindsay Upton leading the way with six block assists. Libero Jamie Frey paced the floor with 19 digs.
Game one was all Cincinnati as the squad led by as many as 11 points and sailed to 30-22 victory behind the strong arms of Stephanie Neimer and Nevitt. The duo each registered six kills.
Nevitt again led the Bearcats with seven kills in the second game. The Blue Demons kept the set close as it was tied seven times in the early portions of the game; however knotted at 12, Cincinnati used a 12-7 run to take a 25-20 advantage. The Bearcats finished the game with a 5-1 run to pick up the 30-21 victory.
Following the break, DePaul jumped out a 10-8 lead, but the Blue Demons were unable to break Neimer's serve as she was behind the line for nine consecutive Bearcat points. When Neimer finished, Cincinnati had a 17-10 lead and the Blue Demons were unable to recover from the deficit. The Bearcats won the final game 30-21.
The Blue Demon offense was led by freshman Charla Drabant and junior Caitlin Callaghan as they both finished with nine kills. Senior libero Maureen Zigulich led the defense with 12 digs, with Callaghan chipping in eight and Drabant adding seven. Freshman Kate Letcher finished with a team-high four block assists.
Sunday's match marked the final time that middle blocker Stacy Pando and Zigulich took the floor in a Blue Demon uniform. Zigulich finishes her career with 667 digs while Pando tallied 108 total blocks and 207 kills.
