Blue Demons Win BIG EAST's Red Division

CHICAGO With DePaul’s win over Syracuse followed by Villanova tying Louisville and USF defeating St. John’s, the Blue Demons finished at the top of the BIG EAST’s Red Division and earned a top seed in the 2007 BIG EAST Championship. As the No. 1 Red seed, the Blue Demons await the winner of the Cincinnati-Providence match in quarterfinal play next Saturday.
After being tabbed eighth in the preseason BIG EAST poll, DePaul finished the season with 21 points on a 7-4-0 record in BIG EAST play while Louisville and St. John’s finished in a tie for second in the Red Division with 20 points each. Louisville earned the No. 2 seed and St. John’s was the No. 3 seed following the BIG EAST’s tiebreaking procedures. USF earned the fourth seed followed by No. 5 Cincinnati and No. 6 Villanova.
The Blue Demons receive a first-round bye by finishing in the division’s top two and face the winner of the Cincinnati-Providence match on Saturday, Nov. 10. Kickoff for the quarterfinal game is set for 1 p.m. DePaul dropped a 1-0 loss at Cincinnati on Oct. 6 and Providence was the only team to defeat the Blue Demons at Wish Field this season. The Friars posted a 2-0 win over the Blue Demons on Sept. 21.
